Plastic containers are fed in by two rotating shafts. One shaft is pneumatically pre-loaded with two air bellows and presses the PET bottles against the second rotating shaft with 16 t of force. The sealed plastic containers are compressed, ruptured, and degassed in the process. Residual liquids drain away, and the pre-compacted material drops into the baler. In case of contaminants, the pneumatically pre-loaded shaft yields, allowing the contaminant to pass through without interruption.

The BOREMA process is considerably more efficient and less prone to wear compared to conventional PET perforators with punch pins or knives. The major advantage is that contaminants (e.g., metal parts, stones, bottles with frozen contents, wood pieces) pass through the pneumatically yielding rotor shaft without interrupting operation or causing major damage. In conventional perforators, pins or knives can break off or become severely jammed with contaminants, requiring shutdown and costly repairs.
