Grinding occurs in the lower section of the mill, where nozzles inject high-pressure compressed gas into the fluidised bed containing the feed material; the resulting gas jet accelerates the particles against each other, causing them to fracture and reduce in size. Comminution takes place at the centre of the chamber, away from the mill housing, leading to extremely low abrasive wear. This feature makes the mill ideal for processing abrasive materials or applications requiring very low product contamination. Within the same chamber, airflow transports the fines to the classifier wheel, where unwanted coarse grains are rejected and returned to the grinding zone for reprocessing, whilst fine particles pass through the classification area onto the next stage—usually filtration. Sometimes a cyclone is installed between the mill and the filter, or even an air classifier. Owing to the high process air flow, only minimal temperature rise is expected during grinding, compared to other milling and crushing technologies.
