Face Hobbing – Continuous Process

Continuous method:
Workpiece and tool (usually Spiron) rotate simultaneously; all teeth are generated in a single operation at once.
The cutter head contains several groups of cutters (not arranged in a circle).
Teeth of constant height (parallel-height tooth).
Conical tooth top surface.

Single Indexing Process:
The workpiece is stationary and the tool (usually Arcon) rotates and cuts one tooth by plunging into the material. Once a tooth is cut, the tool retracts, the workpiece indexes by one tooth pitch, and the next tooth is cut. This process continues until all teeth are completed.
The cutter head has all cutters arranged along a circular path.
Conical tooth height.
Parallel tooth top surface.

The C28 is capable of both wheel and pinion machining.
However, for the single indexing process, the C28 must be appropriately configured. This requires a direct measurement system, a part-drive brake for the workpiece axis, and a license file for single indexing operation.
