Face milling—single part process – continuous method:
- Workpiece and tool (usually Spiron) rotate simultaneously; all teeth are generated in a single operation at the same time.
- Cutter head has multiple cutter groups (not arranged in a circle)
- Tooth height is parallel
- Conical tooth face
Single part method:
- Workpiece is stationary, and the tool (usually Arcon) rotates and cuts a tooth by plunging into the workpiece.
- Once one tooth is cut, the tool moves out of the tooth gap, the workpiece indexes by one tooth width, and the next tooth is cut. This process continues until all teeth are finished.
- Cutter head has all cutters arranged in a circular path.

For the single part process, a C28 needs to be “prepared” – this means a direct measuring system, add-on part drive brake on the workpiece axis, and a license file for single part process production.
