How reverse osmosis works – RO
Reverse osmosis is based on the principle of osmosis, which is observable in nature – for example, with cherries bursting after a summer rain. The cherry contains a concentrated solution (cherry juice), and the raindrop is the diluted solution. The cherry’s skin then attempts to equalize the concentration levels. The solvent migrates through the cherry’s skin (a semi-permeable membrane) into the cherry. The system tends to reach equilibrium between both concentrations. However, as the cherry cannot expand in volume, the pressure increases – this is known as osmotic pressure. In nature, this pressure eventually causes the cherry to burst. Reverse osmosis inverts this principle: pressure is applied to the concentrated solution to overcome its osmotic pressure. The solvent passes through the membrane again, while all dissolved water constituents remain on the concentrate side.

Reverse osmosis, also called RO, is a membrane process that retains both ions and particulate matter in water, thus reversing the natural osmotic process. In RO systems, the saline water (e.g., softened city water) is forced under pressure through semi-permeable membranes assembled as wound elements. Only the solvent – pure water – passes through the membrane, producing permeate with a very low salt content. All other water constituents are concentrated and must be discharged to the drain as a secondary waste stream known as concentrate.
