How reverse osmosis works – RO
Reverse osmosis (RO) operates on the principle of osmosis, a phenomenon observed in nature—for example, when cherries burst after a summer rain. The cherry contains a concentrated solution, the juice, while the raindrop represents a diluted solution. The skin of the cherry functions as a semi-permeable membrane, balancing concentrations by allowing the solvent to migrate into the cherry. This drive to achieve equilibrium raises the pressure inside the cherry as its volume cannot expand, resulting in osmotic pressure which may cause the cherry to burst. In reverse osmosis, this natural process is inverted: pressure is exerted on the concentrated solution, overcoming its osmotic pressure. The solvent (water) passes through the membrane, while all dissolved substances remain on the concentrate side.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a membrane-based process that retains both ions and suspended solids from water, inverting the natural process of osmosis. In RO systems, the saline feed water (for example, softened municipal water) is pressurized through semi-permeable spiral-wound membrane elements. Only the solvent—pure water—passes through the membrane, yielding what is known as permeate with very low salt content. All other water constituents are concentrated and flushed to the drain as a second partial stream, the concentrate.

On an industrial scale, a reverse osmosis system is operated not as dead-end, but as cross-flow filtration. The feed water is split into purified water (permeate—typically 75–80% yield, with roughly 2% residual salt) and a concentrate stream, which continuously removes all other water constituents from the system. Reverse osmosis is often implemented in ultrapure water systems for green hydrogen production.
