Plunge rolling: The thread rolling tools with the same pitch as the workpiece form the thread by penetrating the workpiece up to the nominal diameter. The maximum thread length equals the width of the rolling tools.

Through-feed rolling: Used when the thread length is greater than the width of the rolling tools. Through-feed tools have three sections – the lead-in, the calibration section, and the lead-out. Groove rolls have no pitch and are swiveled to match the lead angle of the profile to be rolled.

Pitch rolls differ from groove rolls by having a pitch in the profile. The sum of the pitch angle and swivel angle results in the lead angle in the workpiece.
